Ceramic tiles are versatile and durable building materials commonly used for covering floors, walls, countertops, and other surfaces in both residential and commercial settings. They are manufactured from clay, sand, and other natural materials, which are moulded, glazed, and fired at high temperatures to produce hard, non-porous tiles.

Types of ceramic tile

Glazed Ceramic Tiles

These tiles have a protective layer of liquid glass (glaze) applied to the surface during the manufacturing process, which provides a glossy finish and enhances resistance to stains, scratches, and moisture.

Unglazed Ceramic Tiles

Unglazed ceramic tiles do not have a protective glaze layer and have a matte or textured surface. They are typically more slip-resistant than glazed tiles, making them suitable for high-traffic areas.

Porcelain Tiles

Porcelain tiles are a type of ceramic tile made from finer clay particles and fired at higher temperatures, resulting in a denser and more durable tile. Porcelain tiles are highly resistant to water, stains, and wear.

Terracotta Tiles

Terracotta tiles are made from natural clay and have a rustic, earthy appearance. They are commonly used for flooring and are prized for their warmth, durability, and timeless appeal.

Advantages of ceramic tiles

Durability

Ceramic tiles are highly durable and resistant to wear, scratches, and moisture.

Ease of Maintenance

Ceramic tiles are easy to clean and maintain.

Hygienic

Non-porous ceramic tiles do not harbour bacteria, mould, or mildew, making them a hygienic choice for areas where cleanliness is a priority.

Disadvantages of ceramic tiles

Substrate Preparation

The substrate (surface to which the tiles are applied) must be properly prepared: flat, clean, and free of debris, grease, and moisture to ensure adhesion and prevent cracking or shifting of the tiles.

Temperature Sensitivity

Ceramic tiles may crack or break if exposed to extreme temperature fluctuations.
