What is a porch?

A Porch is a covered structure in front of the entrance to a building.

Porches were first introduced in the early 1900s. The purpose and appearance differed from region to region. Their function was to protect houses from extreme weather conditions and dirt, and to serve as a transition between indoor and outdoor living.

Why would you want one?

Some would say the reason for having a porch is to have somewhere to stand whilst you are waiting to enter your house. Those from the UK would use them to prevent you from getting wet whilst you are entering your home.

If you are really trying to persuade someone to get a porch there are some other benefits worth noting. These can include adding to the size and value of your house - yes it might not be by much but every square foot counts! With this newfound size, it can allow extra space for storage, a peaceful place to relax or even a new environment to entertain your guests!

Ideas

As with all things, a porch is purely based on your personal preference. Some stress that it is the first thing people see when looking at a home. Others say it’s a glorified waiting area, and you don’t need to overthink it. Your house, your choice!

Permissions

Depending on your location and the size of the porch you plan to build, you may need to obtain permits or adhere to specific regulations. It’s important to check with your local building authorities to ensure that you comply with any necessary requirements.
