Timber frames are large wooden posts and beams, interlocked to create a structure. The frame includes the walls, floors and roofs, creating the base structure of a building. Tiber frames can also be used for small builds, such as sheds, gazebos, porches, and summer houses.

Timber is wood prepared for use in building and carpentry. Engineered timber can be used, or woods such as oak, sapele, ash and beech are also suitable. A particular wood would need to be selected based on the requirements of the project.

Advantages of timber frames

  • Timber is a natural material, meaning it is non-toxic and is safe to touch. It is also a sustainable and renewable material.

  • Timber is a natural insulator and can help reduce heat loss.

  • Timber frames are quick to construct.

  • Timber is versatile and easy to work with.

Disadvantages of timber frames

  • Less stability compared to steel and concrete (due to shrinkage of wood).

  • Risk of rot if not treated or maintained correctly.

  • It can be difficult to make alterations to the frame once built
