A fireplace is a structure built from stone, brick or metal, designed with the intention of containing a fire.
Main components of fireplaces
A fireplace usually contains the following components:
Mantel
A shelf on top of the fireplace that has decorative purposes but also prevents smoke from entering the room.
Face
Located around the opening of the fireplace, projecting into the room. Made from non-combustible materials.
Firebox
Main part of the fireplace where the fire is built, rectangular or square in shape and constructed from fireproof materials such as firebricks.
Hearth
Area the fire is built on, forming the base of the firebox. Designed to protect the floor from the heat of the fire.
Chimney Throat
The location at the intersection between the chimney and the fireplace.
Chimney
A safe passageway for smoke and gases from the fire to be removed from a home.
Back Panel
Located between the opening and the surround. Used to improve the design of the fireplace.
Lintel
Located at the top of the firebox. It helps to spread the load of the chimney breast across the sides of the fireplace.
Chimney Cap
Acts as a roof to the chimney, preventing weather and debris from entering the chimney and into the fireplace.
